Okay let me start and say that I’m no prude. When I was 18 years old I read the Marketplace by Laura Antoniou. Did I like it? It was okay but some of the things that happened in the book I just couldn’t believe. Maybe that shouldn’t have been my very first book into erotica but it was. Did it shape the way I feel about erotic writing? No. Cause I’ve read some good and some bad and some downright terrible erotic books. I’m looking at you 50 Shades of Grey. Still erotica is not my genre of choice. Seeing my reviews here on Creatyvebooks you know that I love fantasy. Doesn’t matter if it’s adult or ya. I will mostly likely read it.

But this is not what this post is about. It’s about my Journey back into New Adult/Erotica writing.

It all start with a challenge by my blogger friend Beaute’ De Livres (Beauty of Books). She is such a sweet heart with an amazing blog that you need to be following if you aren’t. Plus if erotica is your thing, she has some pretty great recommendations via her blog. Seriously, go check it out.

Now back to this challenge. If you know me I don’t back down from anything. Especially a bookish challenge. So what started out as a joke for me to read one of her recommended books turned into a challenge that I couldn’t turn down.

I’m just glad Beaute’ De Livres started with the lightweight stuff first. From there she has some hardcore recommendations that I’m sure will take me completely out of my comfort zone but I’m game.

Speaking books—Bad Things by R.K. Lilley is the first in the challenge. It part of a trilogy. I plan on reading book #2 this October. As you can see with my ratung I gave it 3 stars. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t all that good.

Danika and Tristan started out fine. Danika was a no nonsense, stick it to him and tell it like she meant it type of girl that had a little baggage. She recently broke up with her ex. Tristan on the other hand was kind, funny and apparently a great cook who was also dealing with his own demons. Plus you know he is a man whore. Anyways, about midway through the book their personalities started to change. Danika became desperate, love sick and clingy. Girl you knew from the get go that Tristan didn’t do relationships and you still put your heart on the line. You can’t be popping pussy if you’re the type of chick to fall in love easily.

As for Tristan, well he became and asshole that was possessive and arrogant. Wanting to beat of any dude that looked Danika’s way. There’s nothing better than a man that is wants to protect you and make sure other men respect you and so on and so for but there is a line between and a knight in shining armor and a douche. Like there is one scene where Tristan almost killed a man. So might find that sexy but I’m looking at you with a side-eye. Because safety is important and I don’t need to be dealing with crazy possessive people. Tristan loss major brownie points on that one.

Pushing that to the side I like that sex took some time to build. There is no insta-sex in this book. Thank goodness. Cause I read some books where you read page one and by page 5 they are fucking like rabbits. Ewww. Can’t stand that shit. Still Tristan and Danika had a weird way of trying to stay out of each other pants. But you have to read the book to see what I mean. Obviously, it didn’t work out too well.

The Sex

Now I’m not going to lie but the sex scenes made me laugh and I don’t think that was the intention of the author but yeah I laughed my ass off. I think it was the way it was written that I just couldn’t…..

“See.” he rasped into my ear. “we fit just right.”

“Yes.” I gasped.

He began to move, slow, heavy strokes that had my hands flying to his shoulders, scratching mindlessly.

“I swear to God, I’m finding something to tie you up next time,” he grunted, gripping my hands back above my head firmly, his chest rubbing mine as he thrust, grinding into me, harder, faster……a rough, desperate cry escaping my lips, as I came.

I knew that he followed me as his mouth latched onto my pulse in my neck…….”You fell so good, sweetheart. I swear nothing’s ever felt better in my whole fucking life.”

I felt my body go limp as the powerful tremors eased, and his words made me literally melt

Yes a bitch went limp and melted. I’m just going to leave that there. Nothing more I can say except that Tristan bland silted talking fucked up the mood. Ugh.

Overall Thoughts

Aside from the juvenile writing and the bad sex scenes, Bad Things is not all that bad of a book. It had promise but the execution and writing is what makes this book no higher than 3 stars for me. Also the thing that happened with Jared pissed me off. He was a character that I enjoyed, even thought Tristan treated him like shit when it came to Danika. Jared is Tristan brother. So yeah, there was a triangle that wasn’t really a triangle cause pretty much Tristan nipped that in the butt. He flung feces, beat on his chest and showed how big his cock was in order to say that Danika was his so back the fuck off. Again that possessive male machismo is not all that attractive to me. Just my opinion.

Bad Things is good the first half but by the second half is where things turned me off….well I was never turned on to began but you know what I mean. By the end things started to turn around. Hopefully by book 2 it will get better. You’ll have to see in my next review on this series.

  1. I love this post because you actually posted about it. I love you for accepting the challenge and I love that we totally rated this book differently but we are still friends. I’m honoured that you are willing to read the rest. Xxxxxxx

    1. Thanks for the challenge. It was not something I normally read but I did enjoy Bad Things although it had it flaws. I’m a bit hesitant about book two but still excited to read it. I’m curious what rating did you give book 1?
